A Collection of Religious Celebrations
A 48-page zine curating photos of religious spaces.
Presented in chronological order, beginning in 2017 in France and ending with present-day England, this collection explores the extent to which narrative can be communicated solely through imagery.
The project was initiated with recent photos, taken locally; originally it focused on striking architectural forms, using a monochrome palette to highlight shadows and lines. By contrast, the earlier photos were never intended for publication, expressing a sense of freedom and spontaneity. This juxtaposition takes on new meaning in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the perspective is pushed from the interior to exterior – from within a community to individual isolation and alienation.
Intended as a focus on images, this zine contains minimal text in a neutral style. A map places the photographs in logical correspondence with the index, whilst also offering spatial and geographical context. Its brochure style reflects in creation through travelling, evoking journeys in both a metaphorical and literal sense.
